How-to fix most syncing issues
February 14, 2011 | 19 Comments
As you know, Get It Done is an online app which also syncs across multiple mobile devices like Android, iPhone, and iPad. Mobile devices have a tendency to not be the most reliable place to keep all of your data. There are many situations where the data on the mobile device can become corrupt such as dropping the device, interrupted syncing, or bad internet connection.
This is why your online account always has priority when it comes to data. If your mobile device ever becomes out of sync or has trouble syncing there are a few ways to get a fresh copy of your data from your Get It Done online account.
The first thing to try is a “Reset Data”. This will remove all of your Get It Done data form the mobile device and the next time you sync you will get a fresh copy. To do this:
- Go into Get It Done on our mobile device
- Click on the Settings icon:
(Android users will have to click the menu button to find this icon) - Click on ‘Reset Data’
The next time you sync you should get a fresh copy from the server.
If this dosen’t fix your issue the next thing to try (which fixes 99% or all issues) is to delete the app all together from the mobile device and reinstall it through the app store.
If you are still having trouble syncing then email us, there are not too many issues that we cannot fix.

Is there a way to use Get It Done offline? This would be of great use when traveling for example. (export as spreadsheet is not very handy)
Thanks in advance! Rafaela

You can use the Android, iPad, or iPhone app to use offline.
Or if you choose you can also use http://getitdoneapp.com/m in your web browser.

I am not clear on what the various “sync” options on the iPhone app are – they don’t even seem to fully display on my iPhone. It shows my options as “Online Only,” “Online and Offline (auto” “Online and offline (manual” and “Offline Only”. I don’t know if the auto/manual options are missing text, or what the various options mean. My iPhone app doesn’t seem to sync very well with the online version – even when I tell it to sync it seems to say it’s updating but it never fully seems to update. Any thoughts? I would even appreciate just knowing what the various syncing options mean.

Online Only
This option will not store data on the device, there is no syncing involved, you will always get the latest data from the server. the only downside, it could be a little slow on some devices and there is no access if you do not have an internet connection.
Online and Offline (auto sync)
This option will attempt to automatically sync your online and device data
Online and Offline (manual sync)
With this option you will have to manually press the sync button in Get It Done to initiate a sync between the device and the online app.
Offline Only
Use this option if you do not want to sync with the online app and only want to use it on your device
Anytime you switch this option you should probably press ‘reset data’ in the setting of the app to make sure you have a clean copy of the data

Great, thanks for this explanation. I have had it on the Online/Offline auto sync the whole time, which is the setting it came with. But the app is still not syncing properly. Is this a known issue that you guys are working on? I like the online application a lot and want to subscribe after the free period is over, but I can’t justify doing it if the iPhone app isn’t going to sync properly with the online app in the forseeable future. Thanks!

If you have further syncing issue that can not be fixed by following the steps in the document please let us know.

I am still not able to sync properly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the application several times. The application just doesn’t sync, and in particular changes made on the application on the phone rarely get transferred to the server. This time when I tried to open it it wouldn’t open, it just froze on the home screen. I deleted it and will not reinstall it again.
Kara 2 Apr 2011
Whoops, sorry, typo – I meant I will “now” reinstall it again. Not “not.” I seem to have more success with syncing if I close the application and reopen it – then it will sometimes send changes made on the iphone to the web app, but not always.

Well — set it up for Manual sync, as I’m using a wifi iPad and won’t always have inet access. Made edits for about an hour, tried to sync, and get “Error syncing. Service unavailable.”
Can get to web — writing this over same connection. So, do you require a certain port to be open? Or is something else going on?

Can you sync the same account to two mobile devices? Eg a Blackberry Playbook and an Android phone?
Mike 'Get It Done' Staff 18 May 2011
Yes you can sync more than one device

I am having the same issue as Kara. I am unable to sync properly. The application just doesn’t sync, and some changes made on the website don’t seem to make it to my playbook and vice versa. I like this product but it is becoming a pain to enter stuff and not have it fully sync between the two environments.

Do you have reproducible steps to your issue? This would help us fix the bugs faster.
Stan 27 Jul 2011
Yes, I can reproduce the steps.

I am also having syncing issues. I use the iPhone version and normally use the web version on my macbook pro via a Fluid-created GetItDone app.
Syncing for me so far has been quite problematic. The mobile and web versions have not been in sync since I last reset data on the iPhone. Here are things I have tried to resolve this issue:
* running GID in Chrome
* restarting GID on my laptop (quitting the GetItDone app and Chrome, restarting only in Chrome)
* killing the iPhone version via the recent apps list
* hitting the sync button on the GID iPhone app
* run the mobile site through Chrome on my laptop (this is also out of sync with standard web version)
This is quite replicable — it is rare that anything I do on either platform syncs properly.
I would like to switch from OmniFocus to GetItDone, and this is the only issue that is making me hesitate.

Hi Anna,
Restarting the web app, chrome, or your laptop won’t have any effect on syncing.
The best way to fix syncing issues is to either ‘reset data’ in the app on the phone (see above) or delete the app from the device and reinstall it through the app store on the phone or iPad.
If this does not work for you you can contact us through our feedback page (see link above)

Will the Get It Done app be coming to the Windows Mobile operating system any time soon?
Mike 'Get It Done' Staff 14 May 2012
This is something we are looking into after the 4.0 release
